The Feature You are Trying to Use is on a Disk that is Not Available – HP Software

Issue: After starting up your computer or a certain application, you will see an error message sayin that “The Feature You are Trying to Use is on a Disk that is Not Available” and it is asking you to insert a certain “msi” disk.

Other Error Message Variations:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package ‘msi’ in the box below.

The path ‘c:hp\tmp\src\aio\Setup\TrayApp.msi’ cannot be found. Verify that you have access to the installation package ‘msi’ in a folder from which you can install the product TrayApp.

feature-you-are-trying-useCause: This is a software issue caused by a program that was not properly removed or installed. Everytime that certain program is executed, windows installer would then try to fix it by letting you insert the disc or its windows installer file to load missing files or corrupted files and complete the installation. Now the question is Where is the disc for the specified msi file?

Solution: This problem can be fix by browsing to the specified msi file’s location. Select that file and press ok to let  windows installer fix the prgram atomatically. For HP, the location should be the setup folder inside your installation disc.

x:\setup\

If browsing to the specified file does not fix the problem, then you have to remove manually remove the partially installed program from your computer, and reinstall it again. To remove it, you may download and install the windows installer cleanup utility. After installing it, you may now run the cleanup utility and remove the file specified by HP on the said error message. If the said file is not in the list of installed msi programs, then you may go ahead and remove it directly from the registry. Go to regedit and locate the file below:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hewlett-Packard\Install

Under the said folder are windows installation entries. You need to manually locate through the huge list of entries and look for the msi file that is corrupted. You can use the find (ctrl F) feature to easily locate the registry entry. If you find it, then go ahead and delete it. Make sure you delete all entries related to the corrupted msi file under the folder above. After removing the entries, check if you stil get the error message.

If problem is not resolved up this point then I would recommend doing the following:

  • Completely remove all of the HP software.
  • Install the basic driver of your product by using advanced / custom installation and install only the basic driver. The basic driver should be the software at the very top of the software list, uncheck everything except it. If you are unable to uncheck a certain program, then it should already be isntalled and you just leave it checked. After installationis finnished check print and scan functionality.
  • Install the latest version of HP software.

  1. [...] No such file (psswcore.msi)? – If you do not ahve this file in your CD then most probably this from a previous HP product that you have that may be partially uninstaled. To fix this problem follow the steps on this article, “The feature you are tyring to use is on the disc error messages with Hp“. [...]

Thanks for this. I bought a Hewlett Packard HP Deskject F4580 this week. I am running Windows XP Home but this thing somehow automatically tried to install SmartWebPrinting. Now, every few minutes this thing tries to install itself and when I try to cancel it won’t. It just goes around and around in a loop and I can’t kill it. It’s wasting hours of my time. The only thing I ever had that was more of a nuisance was a Trojan.

I spent few days trying to remove a virus on my Vista/ acer computer, one of the anti spyware/virus/Trojan removals messed with a file somewhere and since then, every time I start my pc I get multiple pop-ups as described in this article. I tried every thing that was published on the net related to this subject and nothing worked. Till I found this article which cleared up the matter for me, these pop-ups are related to an HP software, an installation became corrupted. and since I only have two installations related to HP printers, it was easy to uninstall them. the problem disappeared thanks to the info from this article.
So, thanks a million guys, you really made my day.
