The Connected Printer Does Not Support Wireless Networking

This is particular problem with the following HP Photosmart All-in-One’s:

HP Photosmart C4500 Series:

  • HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One Printer
  • HP Photosmart C4583 All-in-One Printer
  • HP Photosmart C4585 All-in-One Printer
  • HP Photosmart C4599 All-in-One Printer

The Error Message appears everytime you install it on a wireless network.

The connected printer does not support wireless networking.

Cause:

Basically, the printers above is unlike other HP all-in-ones. They do not have Wireless Setup Wizard built in their firmware. There is also no ethernet cable port available on these printers. That is why in order for the you to install the printer wirelessly over the network, you need to temporarily connect the USB cable after the “No Printers Found” message appear during installation. Printer wireless settings will then be configured through USB. However in this case the error message, “The connected printer does not support wireless networking,” appear during the USB setup of wireless network settings. I will get to the point, IT IS YOUR ROUTER that is causing the problem. Apparently the printers listed above only supports Wireless 802.11b/g. You need to make some changes on the settings of your router in order to instal the printer on the network.

Router Changes: (Warning: Changing your router settings can disconnect your computer from your router. You must know to reconnect again if you get disconencted.)

1. You need to set the proper mode of the router.

To do this you need to access your router’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) by typing in your default gateway on the command prompt.

Steps:

  • Click on Start > Run > type in “cmd” > and enter the command “IPconfig”
  • Now,  take note of your default gateway and type it in the address bar of your browser. This will ask you for a username and password for your router’s EWS. You must know this. If not, try using your router manufacturer’s default username and password. Get your default password here , and here, all you need to know is the manufacturer of your router. If you are not able to login contact your service provider, they can help you make changes on your router.
  • Go to Wireless Settings and change the Network Mode to “G”. Also change the Wireless Channel to 9 or 11 (only applicable to G and B mode or mixed mode). Also make sure that Wireless SSID Broadcast is enabled. The image below is an example how a linksys router should look like. I believe it would just look quite the same with other brands of routers.

When you have made the changes and made sure that your computer is still connected to the network/router. You can go ahead and install your HP all-in-one full feature software and driver now.

I’ve done this, but the printer setup still gives me the same message. Anything else I can do?

    • Nikolai says:

what is the model# of your printer? Try connecting it via adhoc connection (note that this will disable your internet connection), if it connects then there might be another router with the same SSID in your area… You might need to change the SSID of your router to a unique one instead of the default SSID …

      • JJ says:

It’s the C4580, and I’m setting the printer up through the PC using the installation disc, and there is no router with the same SSID, and I’m connecting it to the PC using USB, I don’t know if that helps.

        • Nikolai says:

ok, not through the network?. Then you should not be getting this message, please uninstall any partially installed software related to the printer. You can follow this HP uninstall guide.

          1. Remove USB cable and turn OFF wireless feature by pressing the wireless button.
          2. then download the software here. make sure you select your operation system.
          3. Install the software and follow the onscreen instructions. Make sure you select the OPtion for connection Type as “Directly connected to this computer through a USB cable” and ONLY connect the USB cable when prompted to.

Hold on, I don’t just want to connect it to the computer, the computer is needed to set up the printer to use my network.

  2. Wi-Fi-Guy says:

The recommendations above has a couple of problems to be aware of:

    1) Setting the wireless-router’s channel to 9 is almost always a bad idea. The only non-overlapping 802.11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band is 1, 6 and 11. It’s always better to share a channel with another wireless network than to try to fit in-between.

    2) You should leave the wireless mode to mixed. Setting it to “G” will cause interoperability with 802.11b devices and more importantly, the router will not be able to communicate with other 802.11b devices in the area to coordinate air time. Even if you don’t have any 802.11b devices on your network, in mixed mode the router can coordinate air time with 802.11b devices not associated to your network.

    3) A very nice video on how to setup the HP C4500 series of printers can be found here:

Thank you Wi-fi-Guy for your input. I really appreciate it. Out-of-warranty.com aims for accurate information, hopefully others can benefit from this, especially from a wi-fi expert such as yourself. By the way, Can you update the link? it seems to be broken.

      regards,

I had this same error message (“The connected printer does not support wireless networking.”) occur while trying to install a new HP OfficeJet 6500 wireless printer. VERY frustrating, since the software installation takes a long time to install (and then uninstall when it fails).

I have a network router set up with WEP security. I tried to press “Setup / Network Setup / Wireless Setup Wizard” on the printer, and select my router and enter my WEP security passcode (really long). Once I’d done that, I could see the printer as an “attached device” with an IP address from my router setup screen. But it STILL wouldn’t connect.

After a lengthy phone call with HP support, they had me:
go into the “Control Panel / Services” screen, stop the “HP

After a lengthy phone call with HP support, they had me:
      1) go into the “Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services” screen, stop the “HP Network Devices Support” service
      2) browse to the “Network” folder on the HP installation CD, and first right-click on Network.msi to uninstall it, then install the Network.msi, then repair Network.msi
      3) return to the Services screen and restart the “HP Network Devices Support” service
      4) re-install the HP software from the CD.

This time, I didn’t have to connect the USB cable, the software found the printer because I had used the Wireless Network Setup on the printer.

I get the same error message, “The connected printer does not support wireless networking,” but I need assistance troubleshooting it for a Mac instead of a PC. Note, this printer worked wirelessly at some point and all of a sudden stopped. I think once I connected a second Mac Mini to my network, the wireless configuration was altered some way. Please help…thx in advance!

  6. Nikolai says:

I see, the USB cable is just temporary to setup wireless…. Do you have encryption in your router? If there is no encryption, then setupa wep key on it, this will ensure that you are connecting to the right router. Also try changing from different channels on the router ( 6 – 11) …. Also try changing different modes ( G , B or G and B)…
