i just would like to add that the work around stated by nikolai may or may not work since the hpqscnvw error message may sometimes be false or could be the root cause of some other problem specially if you are on a windows XP pc…
another workaround for you to be able to scan will be to create a shortcut of the hpqscnvw file located at the util folder found on the disc of the HP all in one printer… the shortcut can be placed on the desktop to be of easy access.
the util folder can be found by right clicking on the drive that shows the hp disk and selecting explore then as the list is populated, select on util folder… from there you would notice a lot of files and please do find hpqscnvw…
it has worked many times for me…
    thanks nik for the space

Running Windows XP SP3 the only time the message appears on my system is when using the scanner and I attempt to increase the scanning resolution from 600dpi to 1200 dpi. After I restarting the printer and computer the scanner will scan with the 600dpi settings fine although changing the setting to the 1200 dpi results with the “Hpqscavv has Stopped Working” message. Any ideas what may be causing to stop in this situation?

    Thanks
    CFreud

Scanning @ 1200 dpi will result to a very large output file upto 500MB!. Please check if you still have diskspace in your destination drive.

        Hello Nikola

There is plenty of disk space available over 43GB. Are there any other settings that might be limiting the size of file being scanned/transferred or saved on system? The HP2840 Scanner display panel reads “Scanner Reserved for PC scan” after about 10/15 seconds.
Ran the HP LaserJet 2820/2840 Fix Scan Utility just for the heck of it. I knew it wouldn’t fix it. Nothing on Google for specific error/fault listed in event viewer.

        Thanks

Hi there CFreud! That must be a communication problem between your printer and the computer. Try changing the connection type. As far as I know this printer support 2 types of connection USB and Ethernet, right? If one is not working properly, try using the other one, if possible…

I have a Windows Vista laptop (Windows Vista Professional Edition – 32 bit), and the suggestions provided here does not fix the situation. I tried all the options in all permutations and combinations:

    a. Disable Tablet PC
    b. Install the fix from ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software9/COL22120/cs-58181-1/scanjet_vista_tablet_patch.exe
    c. Shutdowns and Restart
