I found this on a site after trying all the registry changes and un-installing drivers and messing with updating usb drivers and un installing usb in device manager. I did not think this would work, and was just a waste of another 15 minutes after wasting 5 hours.

My issue: previously working USB connected HPDeskJet stopped working. 'Device Unknown' in device manager.

Powered off PC and left it UNPLUGGED for 5 minutes. Son of a gun - IT WORKED. Must force some sort of a reload on the mother board - I dunno.

I just wanted to add that I got the installation to work by plugging the all-in-one USB cable to a different USB port on my computer. This port is on the front and it is a USB 2.0. The software immediately said "GOOD" to the connection when I plugged the USB cable to the computer as prompted. On the old connection it would always "say" that the USB connection was "good" after about 5 minutes of lights going back and forth on the cable animation but the software always ended up with a "failed to install" message.

I had this problem. When I installed the HP driver CD, it started the install directly from the disk. Didn't work. Then I started from "Install a Printer" in Windows. After I clicked on that, the installation proceeded as before, but this time it worked. Just like Microsoft, always wanting to be in charge!

before you are going to replace your AIO do this:

1. try to use another usb device or a digital camera or a pen drive. if this works, usb port is working.
2. try to use another usb cable.
3. step two does not work, check the device manager for splats.
4. uninstall the driver in the device manager.
5. install the driver in the device manager.

*if you are using win xp sp3 -this issue is common on win xp sp3 upgrades
- downgrade your system to win xp sp2
- install the AIO software

*if you are using win xp sp1
- upgrade your system to win xp sp2

i know this is stupid but this works. AIO software will not run on win xp with missing files or some files are missing and needed to be installed

*if this will not work you must update the bios chipset for the usb port from the computer manufacturer
