HP TX1000 / TX1320US series – Possible Manufacturing Deffect and a Recall Petition

hp-tx1000-tx1320us-seriesI came accross a thread at HP’s forum site which talks about HP TX1000 / TX1320US series notebooks having certain problems with it, particularly with the wireless adapter and is having some booting problems. The thread started September 2009 and is continuing to grow up to present. Does this mean there is manufacturing defect on the product line? Well, we do not know yet, and we could not really tell unless HP themselves acknowledge the problem and tackle the issue in a more formal fashion.
Meanwhile an online petition has been conducted by dairydot.com with the aim of collecting a significant number of people to join in and sign on the petition hoping to get HP’s attention and investigate on the matter.
As of the moment, issue has not yet been confirmed you can check out HP’s official list or recalled products through this link.

On thursday afternoon my machine is going (for the 3rd time) to the repair service!!! This time is different though.
    ************ PLEASE, ATTENTION: **************
My wifi board stopped working 4 weeks ago and I sent the machine to the repair service just like the first time. When it arrived though, this morming, everything was working fine but along with the notebook I also received a sheet of paper with a list of 6 different parts which had to be changed. Among the list was my CPU! Yes! My CPU! So I decided to check what CPU they put instead. For my surprise, my CPU was downgraded, from the dual core X2 TL-60 1Mb Cache to the single-core MK-36 512Kb Cache. I called HP immediately and they answered that it was a mere “mistake” from the repair center!!!!
    YES! SURE! ELVIS IS ALIVE!!!
Now, I will have to send my machine again so they can return it to the original settings!!!!
If I haven’t checked my CPU, I would be literally robbed!!!
Please, everyone who recently had a repair service should check if the same happened.
NEVER, EVER, I AM GOING TO BUY ANOTHER HP!!!!
    HP, SHAME ON YOU!

Alexandre, I can imagine how frustrating it could have been having to go through the same process all over again…. Let me know how it all went… I hope it all goes well..

tx1000 is refusing to boot up since friday… hp tech support is not of much use either!!!

    • Nikolai says:

if you are still in warranty.. make sure you get compensated.. If not, then there’s not much you can do but spend some cash.

      • Monica says:

I had the same issues with my tx-1120US. After much investigation, I discovered that one our our local TV stations aired a news program on this issue and that the lady who instigated the initial investigation, got a free laptop from HP (an upgraded 2010 model of the same touch tablet now with a better processor (not the hot running AMD that fries the wireless card attached to the board). I mentioned this to the CEO of HP who than had my out of warranty laptop sent in free (as a kind gesture from HP). I sent it out on Tuesday and had it back in my hands Friday morning! They will do something if enough people threaten (in a kind manner). We will see how long the fix lasts, as it is still hot enough to fry a meal on the bottom side when its plugged in. I find if you unplug it, it runs very nicely. It seems that because the wireless chip is part of the board that is being fried when turned on, it’s probably affecting everything, because the glue comes loose with the heat and the video chip disattaches along with everything else. Go figure…

My tx1000 suddenly refused to start 2 days ago, 2 months short of it’s 2nd birthday. It’s so traumatic! The lights would light up for a second then die. :(

I am hoping for an acknowledgement that there is really an issue about it so HP would fix my laptop (and others’) without too much fuss.

      • Salman says:

hey laura.. i’m facing the same problem as u.This Tx series is defective.HP doesn’t care about it’s customers. They sold us defective laptops and they refuse to acknowledge this

          Hey everyone.
Last thursday oct-05 after shutdown and notebook tx1320 refuses to start. I think this notebook was my worst buy last year. i guess this notebook suffer a project problems, much heavy, wrong processor, chassis not helps cooler. Things that you just perceive after buy.

Here in Brazil i guess will cost much more than i imagine repair this little piece of s…

          Good luck everyone.

      • Dave Mc says:

Our TX-1000 died a few months back. Same issue – first the wifi went out, then the whole thing would not boot. The light would come on for a sec, and go out.
I dropped it at a notebook repair shop and they guy there says he just did another one – replaced the motherboard.
        Rediculous!

  4. shortcake says:

    HP, shame on you!

Isn’t it apparent that there is a SERIOUS problem with the TX series along with several other of your computers?

Nvidia PAID you for the defect and you can’t even as so much as fix the problem for the people who bought your computers with their HARD EARNED MONEY!

This is ALL over the web (for example HPlies.com)… There are people who have made this their whole lives because you, HP, have conned your consumers. You took our money and gave us defective computers and now refuse to give us what we deserve. That’s what THIEVES do.

I was a very happy HP customer in the past… I was ALWAYS impressed with your computers… When I purchased my TX1410 I was absolutely ecstatic but it has come out that your “best line of computers” (as customer service told me) is actually NOT the best line. The computers have FAILED us.

Your customer service workers have called us liars… well, I find it ridiculous to believe that hundreds upon hundreds (if not thousands) of consumers are liars. How does it just so happen that we all have the SAME computers, with the SAME defect, with the SAME problem. I don’t think that’s a coincidence… I think it’s telling you something that you are obviously aren’t getting… WAKE UP… your computers are defective!

HP, do the right thing. RECALL these computers… Give us our money back. You could do the right thing and walk out of this with people saying “HP did the right thing” or you could leave it with customers saying “I will never purchase HP again”…

Is it better to live in justice or live in shame? I’ll live in justice and fight for whats right!

  5. Thephotoguy says:

WOW, I have a TX1320US and it to has died within 15 months of light use. NOT HAPPY!

    • Nikolai says:

May I ask, What did you replace it with?

      • Thephotoguy says:

Not replaced yet but we have 2 HP laptops and a desktop. The TX1320 is the youngest, the DV9017 has mostly been good, we replace gear after 3yrs so it will be updated by xmas.
The shame is that I would have been happy to go get the HP netbook now for traveling, a newer DV9 series for xmas and late next year a replacement for the TX1320.
With the TX issues it has woken me up from blindly buying what has always worked for me in the past….
I have loved the 9-10 HP/Compaq computers over the years, mainly cause they just kept working… Now we get hit by a unit that is clearly substandard and HP just look the other way…
I live in the hope that HP will do the right thing soon, in the meantime my money stays in the bank till we must get a new laptop. What that will be will depend on a number of things but it maybe a Dell or an apple with extended global warranty.

  6. Alexandre says:

We should all sign in to the http://www.HPlies.com which seems to be the best organized way to get something real from HP.
Their petition contains more than 10.000 signatures as of this moment as well as some interesting data charts about the affected models, type of problem, GPU temperatures, etc, etc, etc.
Best of luck to us all.

  7. TX1320US says:

Mine is TX1320US, s/n CNF74276BX, same problem, three days ago (091409)shut it down and turn it on but no Boot, blank screen, take RAM out, batt. out, unplug AC/DC cable, turn sw on to reset for 1 minute, put them back on and turn computer on, no Boot, still blank creen, thermo fan still running fine, recharge batt function is fine, put Recovery TX1000 DVD in to boot, DVD seems to read then stop. I keep trying to turn sw on and hopefully it will boot but no luck ?

    • Thephotoguy says:

Sorry to hear about your TX1320… But it seems that most will die, its a design that simply fails…

We will follow this one up with HP at some stage as a product of such cost should last longer than the 14-18 month period we see here.

In the meantime we have brought a non HP laptop. Its a ASUS 1101 netbook. Sure not is featured as the TX but comes with similar user performance for the basic surfing and emails.
Has a two year global warranty
      9 hour battery
One of the lowest repair rates in the industry ( HP and Acer seem to be the most likely units to fail/have issues )

So happy to have a small laptop again, sad its not the tablet :-(

live in hope that HP will provide a solution for TX owners to move on from the doomed TX motherboard / cpu / graphics card / overheating faults.

      And pigs may fly…………..

      • Thephotoguy says:

Can anyone confirm if the newer models have been fixed… i.e better motherboard, cpu, graphics combo that can live longer than 14-18 months???

Looking at a TX2 – 1270US or whatever is the current model when we pass the USA again in Dec or April.

Really like the form factor just do not want to be burnt again…

Well I guess I should look at other brands but for now the HP is what we like, shame about the support / design faults of late

Anyone know if you can buy an extended global warranty on such an HP item so that if it died within say 3years it would be covered wherever I happen to be at that time

        Thanks

        • TX1320US says:

I think the newer model has the same mother board p/n, only the CPU is difference. I did fix my TX1320US myself by reading another forum and see some helps in YouTube

          • Thephotoguy says:

Did you do the wrap in a towel then put in a bag while running trick or the clip that showed the use of a hairdryer and a heat sheild ;-)

  8. TX1320US says:

I turn it on, wrap it in a supermarket plastic bag, turn it up side down and put a newspaper on top of its upside down position, let it run for 3-4 hours then I do a little kew knocks to the edge of the laptop, assuming those hot loosen IC or CPU gets it back to the mounting holes or whatever. Now unwrap it, turn pwr off and let it cool by electrical fan for an hour as it still lay upside down.

After it cool off, put it back to a normal position and turn pwr-sw on, voila …..IT’s ON, boots up fine….. I can say it is miracle to me.

Seems like this forum won’t allow posters to post fwd link in here but you can try that method “WRAP-HEAT” rather than let the laptop is unused and not booting.

I also think after wrap heat won’t work, I’ll unassemble it and use a heat blower to heat the IC’s pins as the guy in YouTube does but definitely not use the heat blower to blow the intense heat to the bottom cover of the laptop, specifically to that area because it might meltdown other internal cables, plastic, perhaps ?.

Truthfully I like the TX1000’s series but according to all other forums, this particular serie model is suck with its mother board, seems HP re-used same mother board again and again without to clear the IC heating problem, so no one trust HP service for this Tx1000’s model and the cost is $400 for service then it will happened again.

  9. Jason says:

HP is the worst computer manufacture ever. Come see the, “I hate HP.” fan page and see testimonial after testimonial why they have horrible products and even worst customer service. Don’t buy HP! You will regret it!

I have the same problem and I just got off the phone with a case manager. All the guy could tell me is that not to update my computer or spend 100+ plus dollars for someone else to tell me what I know is the problem. The problem is that the Microsoft updates are conflicting with the HP Bios and they refuse to fix the problem with the “older models” aka those that aren’t over warranty. What a bunch of thief’s!

Go buy Dell or any other computer manufacture! Go to my facebook fan page and tell your story!

  10. TX1320US says:

After more than a week, I try to turn it on and Boot failed again, I re-wrap it and let it run for 2 hours then turn it off, cool it, turn it on and it boots again. This makes me to think (?), so I decided to unassemble the laptop, so far I can see HP had already put the heat spacer and green gel on top of AMD-CPU and the NVIDIA chip, what I do to bend those four extended leaf-spring to create more contact presure that may help to tranfer heat to the copper heat sink and vacuum dust sticks on the fan’s fins plus all around.

Put things back together is a kind of confused if you did not write notes for what scews set to be for what parts, where that would be. Need to take times to read Service Maunual and do not hurry so you won’t break parts etc …

    See pix: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42993921@N08/sets/72157622335457489/

    Addition info:
Tx1320US “No-Boot” problem with possible over heat of CPU or NVIDIA chip set or exhaust fan or copper and black heat sinks fins are clogged with super fine dusts that need to be vacuumed and brush them out for heat air flows, I also vacuum the mother board surface of both sides particularly to the areas had been filled with fabric dusts. That’s all I do and I do bending up of four extend leaf-spring to creat more contact pressue on top of AMD-CPU for better heat transfer possible.

  12. No2HP says:

This is to everyone who owns a TX Series notebook with the GPU issue.

HP is not going to do a recall of this model unless we can generate negative publicity about the matter. I know this may seem somewhat futile, but i urge everyone who has issues with this model to do the following:

    1. Write a letter to HP about this issue, and send some forum postings of other customers having the same issue along with the letter. Request that HP do a recall of the entire TX series. They may offer to fix your laptop, but please turn them down as request that they do a recall of the entire TX series.

    2. The most important part. Send a copy of your letter to each of the major television network, asking that their investigative team take a look at this issue. Please send your letter to the major networks to stations located in the New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. I would be great if everyone sent a letter to all the major networks in all three cities.

    3. This ties in to step 2. Send all letters within a 15 to 21 day period. If we can get 500 letters to one network, i am certain that this story would make the news, and shed enough negative light on HP that they may be forced to do a recall.

    4. Copy this post to every Forum that you know has posts about this issue. I will take it upon myself to copy this to as many posts as i can, but it does not hurt to have duplicates.

    5. PLEASE send all letters between November 1, 2009 and November 21, 2009.

What I think we, all can do:

    Fwd:
1). File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau at http://www.bbb.org (this will get an immediate response from HP)

2). File a complaint with the California Department of Consumer Affairs at http://www.dca.ca.gov/online_services/complaints/consumer_complaint.shtml

3). File a complaint with YOUR state’s consumer affairs.

4.) File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en

    5.) File a complaint with Rippoffreport.com at http://www.ripoffreport.com/login.asp

You may use the complaint text for each one (that way it saves you loads of time). Also save your paperwork and all emails, conversations, phone records…everything! Do NOT dispose of, sell, trade or otherwise let the hardware go as this may become valuable evidence for authorities.

Your warranty status does NOT matter.

i just bought this 1320 off craigslist without looking it up like a dumbass. i have the wifi problem i wonder how long untill i start getting all the problems everyone else is having. i payed 500 for this peice of crap and now its going to be a paper weight!!! WTF i say we all take our laptops to the main building and start chuckin them at there windows hahaha maybe that will get there attention

The CD/DVD-RW drive with light-scribe & my WLAN is dead on my tx1000z. The laptop isn’t even more that 1 1/2 old and the warrenty just expired. Spent 1,500 on this garbage.

i bought my tx 1000 last 2008 of january. and in less than one year it broke down and overheat. the service center change its motherboard with no charge since its still in warranty but after 5 months or six the motherboard overheat again… and right now its not covered with warranty since its more than a year. the service center told me that it cost around $300 to $400.
im so dissapointed with hp. i thought they have a quality laptops. and will last for long… with tx 1000 in less than a year it broke down. they should have recall all this unit.

  17. Edgar says:

    Hello everyone.

I’ve found a solution to my HP tx1320.
I performed a Ball Grid Array (BGA) Reballing. Tech guy services told me that almos every electronic equipment made recently will suffer same problem. Due environment laws solder have less plumb Pb causing less flexibility and more heat sensitive junctions.

The service is basic and consist of a new solder component less sensitive to heat (Usually Pb90/SN10). They not recommend REFLOW service.

JUST a TIP: If you note turns on lights and fan you can try to check if you notebook has the same problem you can try made a simple test. Turn-on you note. Close lid. roll with a towel covering fan out exits to promote HEAT inside. Leave for a half hour upside down. remove towel and Turn of and turn on again.

This procedure will not fix your note. It will promote just a rebind of leak solder between components for while. So don’t perform multiple times.

obs.: seems that this problem isn’t privilege of HP notes only i saw Xbox consoles and Acer notes too.
obs.: cost in US$ to repair U$150

    Good luck !
    Bye

  18. Anthony says:

    Here is my tx1000 saga.

We purchased 2 of the tx1220US models along with extra power supplies, docking ports, mice etc. for each computer. At exactly 1 year on both of the machnes the wifi started to become flaky. One of the machines still has problems doing a vista SP2 upgrade. Thinking that perhaps there were some issues with the registry or conflicting software updates (because the other machine upgraded fine) I backed up the drive and did a restore from DVD (not the suspect bad hard drive). The wifi initially came up but the flaky symptomps returned without any updates being applied. So I call to have the machine repaired under warranty. Sorry but you are just a couple days out to repair you will need to pay $320 to have an extended warranty. I pay the money and I have the machine repaired and all is good for about 6 months..then it starts again. So I call to get an RMA after backing up the machine AGAIN only to be told that the $320 was not a warranty but a single repair, that to fix the issue it will cost $299 this time which MIGHT include a motherboard repair, maybe not. Knowing that the part in question is failing (the wifi/bluetooth module at $28.00 – internet shopping) that is an insane amount to pay (time and money) for swapping a card that takes all of 5 mintues to swap. So I convince the service guys to send me a card. What I get instead is this tiny bluetooth module that does not appear to be the correct replacement part for bluetooth and wifi. We will see. In the mean time the other tx1220US begins to fail in exactly the same way along with the internal LAN card. On this particular machine an extended warranty was purchased but is now being handled through Radio Shack. Radio Shack…you have got to be kidding..they typically don’t know the difference between an LED and a diode these days. So in order to get the machines fixed they are going to charge more than HALF of the purchase price for a problem they know exists with these units. That is rather unacceptable, especially when one of the machines has already been “FIXED”. The best part is that even though one has been repaired, they don’t show it in their books. How is that for customer tracking. The guy on the phone must have told me 8 times that it was not in their computer systems…perhaps it is because you are looking at a database running on defective HP servers too?

I am not looking for a free lunch and I relize that these little machines can’t and should not be serviced for 4-5 years for free, but when you know you have a serious problem with many units and charging outrageous fees and putting customers through multiple serious gyrations to backup, send in, wait and then restore applications, all the time not being productive, how can anyone recommend this as a “personal” machine. If you are going to make the machine “personal again”, you had better get more personable with your customers or they are going to get personable with someone else, like their lawyers.

  19. steve is frustrated says:

I have the same problem with my tx1320us

    Sent back and motherboard replaced
    bad wireless card & replaced
    Boot issues

Got it back and it worked ok for a while and not
having boot issues & another bad wireless card.

  20. Shorti says:

I have had my tx1320us for almost 2 years. I’ve always had problems with my wireless disconnecting. I have to put the laptop to sleep, then when I wake it up it will connect again. I’ve been calling HP since the beginning. They say that since it will connect then it isn’t the hardware, so nothing they can do. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all how putting the laptop to sleep will would help anything. It would be NICE to be able to do homework on line and not be disconnected. I would love to get the new TX2 model, but not if I have this kind of problem. That’s just too much money to be spending for a ‘glitch’ that they could easily remedy.

  21. Kevin I says:

My Hp Tx1320us Wireless card just let go less then 5 minutes ago. I’m lucky enough to own more then one laptop. It’s weird how my old single core Processor is still working just fine. Unfortunately, I don’t agree with most of you.. all of my laptops are HP model, the customer service is super friendly. I guess this will be the ultimate test. I’m just wondering if it is a design flaw overall.. 12.1 inch computer is a VERY small space to have a DVD burner, Turion processor, Wireless card and what not. My guess is they are all too close together. The TX also gets extremely hot while running, almost to the burning point. i have a 14.1 inch HP and it doesn’t get that hot, and this 15.4 inch I’m using now, for most of the time the fan hardly even come on and runs very cool… So cool I can leave it on. So I’m thinking it is a size issue? I also haven’t read anyone else mention about the extreme heat the TX seems to displace. INTEL makes processors that generate less heat. Why a Turion TL-58 or 60? WELL that’s my rant. I’m going to look into getting it serviced. I wonder if the TX with the Athalon processor has the same issue. I’m not so sure it does.

Mas vendo a quantidade de problemas parecidos, creio que seja mais honesto da HP facilitar as coisas para esses usuários até para o próprio bem deles, a credibilidade deles que está em jogo. Senão resolverem satisfatoriamente não comprarei mais HP.

Well, a friend of mine brought me a TX 1320UA table cause it would not boot. I took out the hard drive and replaced it with a hard drive from another broken pc (a Compaq (HP) Pavillion V6000 running Windows XP) the Wifi, according to my friend was not working as well just before it died. Well quess what. The Wifi worked just fine on a Windows XP environment.
I bought a new Hard Drive, and Downloaded Vista Ultimate OEM. Installed, and the machine Booted, but no wifi. The Tablet Function worked just fine (Did not work on XP), but no WiFi… I had Bluetooth functionality but no WiFi. I proceeded to download all the drivers from HP website, but the LAN driver fails to install, And there is another 2 drivers that fail to install, including a Fingerprint reading function, which I cannot find a Finger Reading Port anywhere, but it is on the Device Manager(No Driver) plus there is and AICP unknown device, which I am not sure but think its the WiFi card… Oh and the web cam is not working and there is no drivers for it either… I swear… All this problems are related to Windows Crappy Vista!! asides from poor Quality Assurance from HP.
XBOX 360 were and I think that they still are Riddle with overheating problems leading to Cold Solders on the the sockets of the Graphics and CPU Processors to come undone, crashing the systems.. Read and Head.. this is the Future Cold Solders….

I have the same problem as you all. My TX 1320us have no wireless and screen does not work neither. Support services say this is a recurrent problem in these HP models and I don’t know if HP issued a recall for it so far. it is too expensive to continue this way. I live in Brazil and have little access to their customer support service.

I did have the problem the screen blacked out but i found a solution and saved me a lot of money which i read one of the forums turn the computer on wrap it in a bath towel then put it in a plastic bag for about an hour or more so let it overheat when it is really hot turn the laptop off then on and voila i have the same laptop and now it is working perfect i tried this 5 days ago. but I’m still researching about the wireless internet .

Bought the tx1000 3years ago, has been a problem ever since the 1st year. The WWAN doesn’t work (had to buy a USB WLAN) to get connection. Then the boot system is a mess. Have to try rebooting 10-15 times before the display comes on. Now, the system has crashed totally, the motherboard is shot I guess. Tried HP since the first incident, they get asking for other things to be done before they admit bad WWAN hardware or connection. This should be total recall on the motherboard and accompanying parts.

I am so glad that many DV6000 series Pavilion laptops were repaired by HP. However, the TX1000 series of laptops uses the same defective motherboard and has the same problems as the Dv6000 series and no recall or repair program was instituted by HP. The motherboard HP part number is 441097-001, the same as used by the Dv6000 series. I ordered a motherboard to repair a HP Pavilion tx1327cl. When I placed the order I was required by HP to provide the unit’s serial number and product number. The replacement part costs over $400.00! I installed the replacement motherboard and discovered that it was not correctly configured for a tx1327cl but rather a tx1250eg. The BIOS needed to be tattooed, that is a special HP utilility called HPsetCfg is need to change the BIOS serial and product numbers. Why is this important? If you try to restore the system from a HP System Restore DVD, the system will be setup as a tx1250eg. If you try to restore the system from the user made restore disks, an error message occurs, “Disks not for this machine”. I spent many hours on the phone with HP support explaining this problem and I was directed to a case manager. The case manager explained that I should have sent the notebook to HP for repair and there was nothing that could be done to resolve the problem. I came up with my own solution: I contested the parts purchase with my credit card company and requested a full refund since the part HP provided did not correct the problem as it was the wrong part for a tx1327cl. HP is not short for Hewlett Packard, it REALLY means Hopeless Products. Our IT group will never purchase HP products nor recommend them to any of our clients. HP you are the new Packard Bell and very soon we will be reading about you going bankrupt! Thanks for nothing HP

HP Pavilion tx1000 has been giving me overheating issues. I have had the laptop repaired by the Geek Squad at Best Buy twice within my 2 year warranty and now my warranty recently expired and the laptop wont boot most of the time and the wireless adapter is not even being recognized. The Nvidia chip inside the laptop has a defect and is frying the computer. Please recall this product. So many customers are having this issue and the laptop cost me 1000 dollars with a 200 dollar 2 year warranty. Please listen to our petition and help us out.

SIGN THE PETITION if you feel the HP Pavilion TX1000 should be recalled due to the defect of the Nvidia chip overheating and causing the wireless card to stop functioning as well as the screen to not boot.
