HP Office Jet Pro L7780 – Setting Up a Manual IP Address

As I have discussed in my previous post, the HP Officejet pro has a firmware flaw that causes the printer to freeze and become unresponsive every time the Wireless Setup Wizard is activated.
Jim, a recent OOW visitor also had a very unusual problem which may be related to this firmware flaw. Apparently, the printer does not turn ON when the router is Turned ON. However, just as soon as the router is turned OFF the printer will function normally.

There are a lot of variations regarding this issue, but it all points out to the wireless setup wizard wherein it searched for the router and writes the necessary wireless network settings on the router.

Anyway, heres how to set up a manual IP on your L7780.

1. Go to command prompt and type in Ip config. If you need more visual explanation you can view the video tutorial on how to get Ip settings here.

2. Take note of your ip address, subnet mask and default gateway.
3. Go in front of your printer and press the setup button (Wrench Symbol) in the control panel. Using the arrow keys, go to Network and then press “ok.” Under network, go to IP settings and press “ok.” Under IP settings, go to Manual and set the IP settings using the network settings that we got from your computer.

Important Reminders:

  • Use a different IP Address for your printer. The IP address of your printer should be different from other devices on the network. For example, The address of your computer is 192.168.1.102, you can then set an IP address on your printer as 192.168.1.202, 192.168.1.203, 192.168.1.204, and so on.
  • HP L7780 subnet mask should be the same with you computer and so with the default gateway.
  • 4. If you have already set the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway of your printer, run the wireless setup wizard again and your HP L7780 would be conencted to the network now without freezing.

    1. Great article, but it doesn’t really to work with my router ip address, any hints?

For those using the L7780 with a mac and having problems with it freezing when setting up the wireless, I think I figured it out. There is no firmware update for mac, so you have to do it like this:

      1. Set up a manual IP, Subnet, and Default Gateway on your printer under settings –> network –> advanced. The IP needs to be different from other devices on the network (as said above). So, if your IP is 198.168.1.1, change the printer to 198.168.100.200 (the printer uses three digits in all spots).

      2. Then check your mac under system preferences –> network –> TCP/IP for the subnet mask.

      3. Then your default gateway should be the same as your router (in this example 198.168.1.1). You’ll find this in the same place as your subnet mask.

      4. Now run the wireless setup wizard. Don’t run it before you’ve finished the other tasks.

If your printer is frozen, unplug it 20 seconds, then press and hold # and 3 while you plug it in. Hold for 5-10 seconds. It will say in a few moments that it resent. This should get you up and running again.

I seem to have a worn out belt on the printer head. I get an error message saying there is a paper jam and while doing an extensive search for remaing jammed paper I saw the belt is worn. can I get a belt and is there diagrams showing disassembly available?
