How to Remove Faronics Deep Freeze 6 & 7 in Three Different Ways

Faronics DeepFreeze is a very powerful application. It virtually prevents all unwanted changes in your computer by freezing an entire hard drive or partition without restricting user access. Deep Freeze is perfect for work stations and is commonly used as a security software to maintain system integrity without sacrificing user experience. Due to this, it is completely logical for the application’s makers to impose a bit of security on to it. The Developers apparently have removed access to any Deep Freeze uninstall utility or procedure because it imposes threat on the software’s purpose.

This security feature may sound quite appealing, however some users that wants Deep Freeze removed are left hanging and does not know where to start on how to uninstall Deep freeze from their system. In this post I will be showing you three different ways to uninstall or remove Faronics Deep Freeze in your system. I will be using the latest version 6.2 of Deep Freeze Standard as an example, however the following instructions also applies to deepfreeze7.

Disable Faronics DeepFreeze

The first way is simple. All you you have to do is disable DeepFreeze using the program’s interface. Disabling it is actually good as uninstalling, as the program no longer interferes with your system as you make changes to it. Unless, you decide to re-enable it in the future. To disable Deep Freeze, all you have to is double click while pressing the shift key (shift + double click) on the Deep Freeze system tray icon  [Deep Freeze Icon],  which is located in the lower right hand corner of your screen. After doing so, you then see a new window (see image below), which prompts you to enter a password. If you have a custom password then you may enter it accordingly, if you have not set any password yet then try pressing “OK“.

Disable Deep Freeze

After entering the correct password, you will be directed to another window (see image below), which shows you several options for configuring Deep Freeze. To disable Deep Freeze, all you have to do is select the “Boot Thawed” option and click “Apply and Reboot“. This will reboot your system,  so it is important for you to make sure that you have saved all unsaved work before restarting.

View this ScreenShot For Details

You have just disabled Deep Freeze! And you are free to make any changes on your system without worrying Deep Freeze changing your system. By the way, you can always re-enable Deep Freeze by repeating the whole process and selecting the “Boot Frozen” option in the window shown above.

I personally use this step. I find this very practical because I test a lot softwares and I really don’t want them adding unwanted files into my system. After I have tested an application, all I have to do is restart my system  and every bit of that software is removed!

Disable All Faronics Deep Freeze Services

The second way to uninstall DeepFreeze involves the first procedure above plus another added step. While the procedure above may be enough, it still shows an icon of Deep Freeze [Deep Freeze Icon] in your system tray. This icon is completely useless, it only indicates that you have deep freeze in your system and the red x means that it is disabled. To remove this icon all you have to do is disable the Deep Freeze service from the start-up. You can do this by typing the command services.msc in the run dialog box. Once you are in the services window, locate the service name DFserv and right click on it and select properties (refer to image below).

View this ScreenShot for Details

After clicking properties, stop and disable the service. Refer to the image below for instructions. Note that a restart is needed for changes to take effect on your system.

deep freeze service

After restarting, at this point you no longer have any Deep Freeze service or application running at the background of your system. Also the system Deep Freeze Icon should be gone. You are still able re-enable Deep Freeze by reversing the whole process.

Completely Remove Deep Freeze

If you really need to completely remove Deep Freeze from your system then you must complete the first step, which is to Disable Faronics Deep Freeze . Restart your computer. After restarting locate the Deep Freeze installer [Deep Freeze installer] and run it, it should prompt the whole removal process and all you have to do is follow the steps. I have provided screen-shots below to further assist you.

I’ve installed deep freeze(version 6.30.060.1818)on my first PC(OS windows XP)for quite some time, so I can say that I’m bit familiar using it. I tried to install the same version on my new PC (OS: windows7 64bit). However, no deep freeze icon appear on the right lower corner of the screen. my problem now is I cannot perform the first step( I cant find the icon) thus I cant disable the deep freeze. I tried doing the 2nd step, skipping the first step but it won’t work. Please help.

Hello, I have a situation here. recently installed deepfreeze 6 standard on my computer. I accidentally deleted my faronics folder when my comp was unfrozen and was on safe boot. When i booted it in normal mode at the same time freezing it my whole system just got stuck. I don’t see the DF logo on my system tray. I tried to uninstall it but i can’t cause I deleted the DF folder which holds the DF uninstaller. I tried the date changing method that people recommended but to no avail. Can anyone help me? I’ve been searching for ways to “free” my computer of this problem for 4 days now. I’m losing all hope. I don’t want to resort to reformatting my system since I have allot of work related files and stuff that I don’t want to use. Hope you guys can help me out.

    Best regards,
    Darriel

What about when the machine is FROZEN and you cannot unthaw it because the tray icon is missing and not recoverable? The CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+F6 trick didn’t bring it back either. I tried disabling and stopping the service, which worked, but comes back again when restarting. In addition, I do not find DF5Serv in my Add/Remove programs. In the Start->All Programs, it’s not there either. Note: I first installed Deep Freeze Enterprise, then thought I needed to install a client version too. So I think I’m doubly screwed, although I’m not seeing that the client is installed.

I would LOVE to install Windows XP again, will that work? I might try it, but would love your feedback anyway.

  16. Kay says:

None of the above steps work for me because I cannot unthaw first. Can I just reinstall Windows XP? (I already have my files backed up anyway as this is a fresh installation of Win XP.)

before i disabled the Deep freeze i boot frozen it then disabled it on the service… then delete the folder.. and i found out that DFS is still working.. hmm and i cant uninstall it… the version i used 7.. but dont know what of the 7 series version of DFS..:D

  27. Persistent says:

My installation of Deep Freeze got deleted with a System Repair. I was acting irresponsible with a few Linux distributions that came on some bootloader I heard about and all of my x64 programs are deleted. I am serious.

Deep Freeze was one of these programs, though disabled, it seemingly re-enabled itself as soon as I repaired Windows because of what I did with Linux kernels that made the boot manager become missing.

With the executable gone, I cannot disable deep freeze. I cannot reinstall because DFServ is still running. Even after I disabled it it seems it is running. I’ll keep working at it, but a suggestion (aside from format my computer) is most appreciated.

If anyone with an Acer Aspire 5810TZ and Vista Home Premiumis willing to make a restore image of a stock system so I can apply that via my copy of Windows Vista Home Premium installer (without the OS, just the repair/recovery functions), that would be most wonderful. Since eRecovery doesn’t seem to exist on my machine anymore, I am screwed when it comes to restoring with factory defaults. Please help! I need either the running remnants of Deep Freeze removed or the aforementioned backup image I asked for.

  28. Persistent says:

And oh, it’s Deep Freeze 6. I followed the instructions to no avail.

I installed Deep Freeze 6.3 successfully and was able to use my PC right afterwards. After a few hours, I turned off the PC. When I restarted it again, the PC won’t boot to the OS as it can’t find the boot disk (disk drive c:). Even when I entered Setup (BIOS), nothing was shown as the primary master drive but it shows my secondary drive (primary slave). Whatever happened there? Please help!

My issue with deep freeze is this. I do not have the deepfeeze icon in my System tray. I do not have the program in SERVICES.MSC, but deep freeze is still there. How do I know its because I have done several checks. Changed the desktop background. Goes back to the background picture I had when I had deep freeze installed. Played Mass effect/dragon age origins (all save games are saved to the system drive) though I save in the games. When I restart it deletes the savegames. Please help, before I have only one other choice and that is to wipe the hard drive.

  46. Tiby says:

I’d suggest you to use a program called “Your uninstaller”. I used it a lot of times to remove stubborn programs that refused to uninstall. It is free and fully functional for 30 days, so you can use it for your purpose. Practically, it identifies all the programs installed in your computer and if you ask it to uninstall one of these, it identifies all the files and registry keys belonging to that program and removes them. It really is a great tool. Success and please don’t forget to reply to me if it was useful for your problem; I’m really curious.
Question: why do u use tools like Deep Freeze? Those are designated for internet-cafes, where lots of users can bring lots of bad codes into computer. In my opinion, it is useless for personal use, especially if you have good antivirus / antimalware programs.
    Good luck!
