I forgot to mention that the printer had no installation disc. I was trying to install from the HP website. Much of my attention has been focused on the "invalid command line argument" question but there might be other problems. The PC is second hand too, and there is a lot of stuff on it that I'm still going over. I found quite a few HP programs and, after reading your article, I started to wonder if that's where the trouble might lie.

Hi Antonio, Try ths other method:

 - insert USB Cable.
 - Wait for the "Plug and Play" service to do its thing until it asks you to insert the installation disk.
 - insert the Disk and press OK.
 - follow the On-Screen instructions.

- If you still encounter problems, let me know.

I posted this problem at other sites, but your article raised a question.

(I am at my wits end. I recently acquired a second hand Dell Dimension 4600 in good condition. At the same time I acquired an HP Photosmart 7960. My OS is Windows XP. The problem: I can't install the printer. The printer works fine, it just doesn't seem to want to work on the PC. I went to the HP chat. We tried everything, twice. They suggested the problem wasn't the printer but the PC. The Photosmart is listed as compatible with Win XP. When I try to use the Add Wizard and print a test page, page fails to print. When I try to download installation software from the HP website, it makes it to step 3 before I run into this roadblock: "Invalid command line argument. Consult the Windows Installer SDK for detailed command line help." I've exhausted the HP option. I was on HP chat for two days trying to fix this, so you can see how desperate I am. I have two good pieces of equipment that just won't talk to each other. I don't want to send a perfectly good printer to the junkyard. Something, somewhere is keeping these two apart. Help!)

Question: Could HP programs installed on the PC be interfering with the printer installation?
